U.S. tea imports in May 2023
In May 2023, the United States imported 9,290.9 tons of tea, a year-on-year decrease of 25.9%, including 8,296.5 tons of black tea, a year-on-year decrease of 23.2%, and green tea 994.4 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 43.1%.
The United States imported 127.8 tons of organic tea, a year-on-year decrease of 29%. Among them, organic green tea was 109.4 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 29.9%, and organic black tea was 18.4 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 23.3%.
U.S. tea imports from January to May 2023
From January to May, the United States imported 41,391.8 tons of tea, a year-on-year decrease of 12.3%, of which black tea was 36,199.5 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 9.4%, accounting for 87.5% of the total imports; green tea was 5,192.3 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 28.1%, accounting for 12.5% of the total imports .
The United States imported 737.3 tons of organic tea, a year-on-year decrease of 23.8%. Among them, organic green tea was 627.1 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 24.7%, accounting for 85.1% of the total organic tea imports; organic black tea was 110.2 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 17.9%, accounting for 14.9% of the total organic tea imports.

China is the third largest tea import market for the United States
From January to May 2023, the United States imported 4,494.4 tons of tea from China, a year-on-year decrease of 30%, accounting for 10.8% of total imports. Among them, 1,818 tons of green tea were imported, a year-on-year decrease of 35.2%, accounting for 35% of the total green tea imports; 2,676.4 tons of black tea were imported, a year-on-year decrease of 21.7%, accounting for 7.4% of the total black tea imports.
Other major U.S. tea import markets include Argentina (17,622.6 tons), India (4,508.8 tons), Sri Lanka (2,534.7 tons), Malawi (1,539.4 tons), and Vietnam (1,423.1 tons).
China is the largest source of organic tea in the United States
From January to May, the United States imported 321.7 tons of organic tea from China, a year-on-year decrease of 37.1%, accounting for 43.6% of the total organic tea imports.
Among them, the United States imported 304.7 tons of organic green tea from China, a year-on-year decrease of 35.4%, accounting for 48.6% of the total organic green tea imports. Other sources of organic green tea in the United States mainly include Japan (209.3 tons), India (20.7 tons), Canada (36.8 tons), Sri Lanka (14.0 tons), Germany (10.7 tons), and the United Arab Emirates (4.2 tons).
The United States imported 17 tons of organic black tea from China, a year-on-year decrease of 57.8%, accounting for 15.4% of the total import of organic black tea. Other sources of organic black tea in the United States mainly include India (33.9 tons), Canada (33.3 tons), the United Kingdom (12.7 tons), Germany (4.7 tons), Sri Lanka (3.6 tons), and Spain (2.4 tons).
